Confederate forces under Cormac MacCarthy, Viscount Muskerry, were defeated by Parliamentarian forces under Lord Broghill at Knockniclashy, Co. Cork, after which General Edward Ludlow, accompanied by Major General Hardress Waller and Broghill, marched into Kerry with 4,000 foot and 200 horse towards Muskerry`s redoubt at Ross Castle, Killarney. The supply route from Castlemaine was cut off by Ludlow, who had pre-fabricated gunboats made in Cork, brought by ship to Castlemaine and then overland to Lough Leane, where they were reassembled and floated onto the lake. Surrounded by English forces, the defenders of Ross lost heart and surrendered. Date : The 22 June to the 5th of July
