After the fall of Ross Castle, Piaras Feirit?ir, who had held Tralee, obtained a safe conduct to negotiate terms of surrender with the Cromwellian military governor of Kerry, Brigadier John Nelson, in Killarney. On his return to Corca Dhuibhne, Feirit?ir was arrested in Castlemaine and imprisoned in Ross Castle with his brother-in-law, Tadhg Moriarty, a Dominican friar and theologian. Both were executed on this date at Cnoc?n na gCaorach (now known as Martyrs` Hill) in Killarney.
