Cromwellian confiscations and planters in Corca Dhuibhne.
On the completion of the Cromwellian conquest, the estates of Catholic landowners in Corca Dhuibhne, such as the Rices of Ballingolin and Ballymacadoyle, the Husseys of Dingle and Lough, the Moriartys of Annascaul, the Knights of Kerry in Rahinnane and Gallarus, the Trants of Ventry and the Feirit?irs around Ballydavid, Ballyferriter and Muir?och were confiscated. Their lands were granted to the Parliamentarian commander, Charles Coote. Coote was later reconciled to Charles II, who created him 1st Earl of Mountrath. His widow, Jane Hannay-Coote, the dowager countess, later married Sir Robert Reading. They sold the lands in Corca Dhuibhne in 1666 to Frederick Mullins, a former officer in Cromwell`s army. The distribution of the confiscated properties among the newly arrived Puritans, together with the extensive estates of the Boyles, earls of Cork, changed the landholding pattern of Corca Dhuibhne into predominantly Protestant possession.
